Case Study: Why Stadiums Can Benefit from Advanced Digital Documentation

High-quality flat floors are crucial for most industries to successfully and safely complete day-to-day operations. At Planit, we utilize 3D laser scanning technology and compare the scanned data with detailed BIM models to provide accurate, detailed floor flatness reports. If you require a floor flatness survey, our team is here to help.

Keep reading to learn why these reports are critical to a solid and safe construction project and how to obtain one with Planit’s floor plan measuring service in Toronto.

Why Do You Need a Floor Flatness Survey?

A floor flatness report is a test that determines the flatness or evenness of a concrete slab floor. This test is crucial to ensure that commercial buildings have flat surfaces for transporting and storing goods and to determine the quality and usability of the surface long-term.

Activities like driving forklifts, pushing shopping carts, and hauling hospitality laundry bins require a smooth, even surface to prevent accidents.

These are also necessary for safely stocking supplies in warehouses and other storage facilities. Uneven floors could cause sensitive or potentially dangerous goods, such as chemicals and heavy equipment, to fall, break, or spill.

What Causes a Concrete Floor to Lay Uneven?

Walking over uneven surfaces, while common outdoors, isn’t conducive to a productive, efficient, or even safe environment for indoor commercial spaces. When the quality of concrete is neglected, floors can set unevenly.

For example, when concrete isn’t properly mixed or cured, the dried concrete can crack, affecting the floor’s flatness level and structural integrity.

If your concrete isn’t laid correctly or the subgrade compaction is inconsistent, this can impact the elevation across the floor. This type of issue can make installing crucial things like floor coverings and equipment more difficult.

The Benefits of Floor Flatness Reports

A flat and even surface is critical to a building’s operational efficiency and structural integrity. Assessing your concrete floor professionally can help you avoid the issues touched on above, and also provide a number of benefits, such as:

  • Improved quality control/quality assurance
  • Reduced safety risks
  • Reliable documentation for future maintenance, renovations, or retrofits

Planit’s Work with Commercial Floor Flatness Surveys

Advanced technologies like BIM and laser scanning can provide detailed and accurate floor plan reports that you can’t get through traditional surveying methods.

Our team at Planit has worked with various construction and development companies to assess their floor flatness and get their project off the ground. Recently, we assisted a company in a new commercial development to address this issue. Here’s how we approached it:

The Challenge

The contractor was working with a 100,000 sq ft concrete floor and had no existing conditions to reference. He needed a reliable way to monitor construction quality, validate installs, and streamline handover documentation without working from historic data.

How Our Team Helped

Using LiDAR laser scanners, we measured the floor flatness using gradient maps to highlight surface variances, such as differences in elevation. Using the information from our laser scans, we compared the floor plan designs to the final product, checking to confirm that certain components were properly embedded and structurally framed.

We were able to detect issues commonly missed by traditional F numbers, identify issues before they became a problem post-construction, and capture construction milestones and in-wall MEP conditions.

Our floor flatness report was able to provide the following benefits:

  • Improved quality control/quality assurance
  • Reduced safety risks
  • Reliable documentation for future maintenance, renovations, or retrofits
